So…. you’re probably thinking of buying your first sex toy.

You’ve probably opened a tab, closed it, most likely reopened, wondering why there are so many colour options and considered deleting your search history for absolutely no reason.

Don’t worry – you are not the only person googling this at 11:47PM in incognito mode.

You shouldn’t feel awkward about wanting to feel pleasure and if you’re not sure where to begin, here is your no-judgement starter guide.

1) I Promise You Do Not Need The Beyonce Of Vibrators

For your first time, you want to purchase something that feels approachable.  A simple bullet vibrator is usually the least overwhelming place to begin. It’s discreet, easy to use and doesn’t require a user manual that looks like IKEA instructions.

And later, if you realise you like it and are willing to splurge on upgrades or other fancy shmancy features, then go for it! We just wouldn’t recommend starting there, as more people than you’d think don’t end up enjoying the experience.

You don’t want to spend £80+ on a machine with 37 different vibration settings only to realise it is not for you. This is meant to give you pleasure, not displeasure with your wallet!

Which brings me to my next point:

2) What Are You Curious About?

sex toy blog imageBefore clicking on ‘add to basket’, ask yourself: what do you actually want to explore? External simulation? Something subtle or stronger?

Online reviews, TikTok trends and influencer recommendations can make you feel like you have to buy the ‘it’ toy, when really, a beginner-friendly toy is about learning what makes YOU feel good.

3) Material Is More Important Than Aesthetic (Sorry Not Sorry)

Yes, the lilac toy is cuter than the red one.

But did you check if it has body-safe silicone? ABS plastic? non-porous material? waterproof options as these are much easier to clean?

Avoid anything that feels suspiciously rubbery or has zero material information listed. Being safe is the new cute!

3) You May Feel Weird About It

Even if you’re open-minded, progressive and empowered, you might still feel awkward making it to checkout. It’s because most of us were raised in a culture that made pleasure a punchline or a taboo topic. Even though the timeline currently is for self-care, cultural baggage still has a tendency to creep up.

You may feel embarrassed, nervous, guilty, excited or even all of the following.

So if your inner voice goes, ‘Is this allowed?’, yes. It is. COMPLETELY. No need to feel guilty about giving yourself a little VIP treatment 😉

The awkwardness will fade faster than you think.

4) A Toy Doesn’t Replace People

If you’re in a relationship, a toy isn’t competition, nor is it a statement or threat (your toxic ex, however…well that’s a story for another day). You’re allowed to want more sensation,  more confidence and more fun in your own body.

5) Clean It. Please.

We love pleasure, but we also love hygiene, yippee!

Make sure to wash your toy with warm water and mild, unscented soap, or a dedicated toy cleaner. Let it dry completely before storing. A simple routine, but it definitely makes all the difference.

Pleasure is learnt. It’s trial, error and curiosity. Finding out what pressure, rhythm, or shape works for you is the fun part.

I hope this guide helped a little, and as always, you can get in touch if you want to have a further chat 🙂
