When you’re taking a pregnancy test, you want an answer you can trust.

Choosing a product that creates less plastic waste may matter to you, too, but does a more sustainable design mean compromising on accuracy?

The short answer is that sustainable midstream pregnancy tests can be accurate; usually the accuracy level depends on the user….

To be clear, “biodegradable” or “sustainable” describes the test’s materials or environmental characteristics, not its medical performance. Accuracy depends on the individual test, its ability to detect pregnancy hormones, and how and when you use it.

How do sustainable midstream pregnancy tests work?

sustainable midstream pregnancy testsLike conventional home pregnancy tests, sustainable midstream pregnancy tests detect human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG, in your urine. This hormone rises during early pregnancy. Hoopsy’s test works in exactly the same way as the plastic tests; we have just taken out the majority of the plastic. A paper-based design is an environmental feature, not proof of diagnostic accuracy.

A sustainable design may replace a bulky plastic casing with paper-based materials. That change does not automatically make the test less accurate: the important question is whether the test reliably detects hCG. To be sold in ANY country, pregnancy tests have to undergo strict testing and approval processes, so as long as the test has your local country’s approval or CE or FDA (CE and FDA are the two most highly regulated approval processes) then your test will be accurate if you follow the instructions.

What does “over 99% accurate” actually mean?

All home pregnancy tests claim accuracy of 99% or more. These figures generally reflect testing under controlled conditions and apply from the day your period is due. It does not mean every test taken at any time will give the correct result.

Testing too early can produce a negative result even when you are pregnant, because there may not yet be enough hCG for the test to detect it. Real-world accuracy can also be lower if instructions are not followed properly or results are read incorrectly. These limitations apply to any kind of pregnancy test.

How can you get a reliable result?

Whatever your test is made from, a few practical steps can help:

  • Wait until your period is due or missed, following the test’s stated testing window
  • Check the expiry date before using it, they really do expire & won’t be reliable after that date
  • Follow the instructions for collecting urine and reading the result
  • Use your first-morning urine, especially when testing early because your hCG is highest
  • If the result is negative but your period hasn’t started, repeat the test in a few days

If you have taken lots of repeated tests that are negative and your period still hasn’t arrived, speak to your healthcare professional.
