The cheapest way to test: strip tests

Strip tests like One Step are by far the cheapest at around 35p a test in a 20 pack. They are the same technology used in clinics, they do contain plastic, but less than a midstream test since they don’t have the plastic casing. The trade off is the process: you wee in a cup, dip the strip, and wait. If you test a lot and don’t mind the faff, they have the lowest price per test of the options compared here.

Own brand midstream tests

Boots’ own test is £2.50 per test, and Superdrug’s is £3.99 for a single. Same midstream format as the big brands, plain packaging, no early-testing claims beyond the day your period is due.

The big brands: Clearblue and First Response

Mainstream Clearblue midstream tests work out at £5 to £12.49 per test depending on the pack and if it is digital, and First Response Early Result is £5.25 per test at Superdrug. OVUM Early Detection, bought direct, works out at £5.75 per test, and every box includes a prepaid return envelope so the used tests get recycled. What you are paying for over own brand is the early-testing claim (testing before your missed period) and the brand name.

Digital tests

Digital tests like Clearblue Digital Ultra Early are the most expensive at £12.49 for a single test. You are paying for the screen that spells out “Pregnant” or “Not Pregnant” instead of lines, which some women find reassuring, and others find a very expensive way to read the same result. They also contain a battery and electronics, so they are the worst option for waste.

Where Hoopsy sits

Our eco midstream test is £5.00 a test, or £4.50 on the monthly subscription, with free shipping. That puts us in the same price bracket as the big plastic brands, a bit more than own brand, and a lot less than digital. The difference is what the test is made of: 99% plastic-free, instead of a bit of plastic that sits in landfill for up to 30 years. Plus, the packaging is recyclable.

If you test every month

Plenty of women test monthly, not because they are trying, but because they want to know. If that is you, the yearly maths looks like this for 24 tests: strip tests come in under £15, Clearblue Rapid Detection works out around £120, our subscription is £107.88 for the year posted to you, and going digital would cost you nearly £300. The honest summary: strips win on pure price in this comparison, so it comes down to what you want to hold, read, and throw away each month.

The one thing price does not change

Every midstream test in this table states over 99% accuracy from the day your period is due, whether it costs £2.50 or £12.49. So choose on the things that actually differ: how early you can test, how you like to take the test, and what happens to it afterwards.
